Electric Actuators, Facility Tours, and Happy Hours…Oh My!

On June 15, 2016 the YP committees of PA-AWWA and NJ-AWWA jointly held a tour and happy hour in Newtown, PA.  A small group of water professionals came out to the Harold Beck & Sons electric actuators manufacturing facility to learn about actuators. Beck assembled an enthusiastic team who started the tour by talking about the history of the company and electric actuators. Attendees learned about Beck’s history as a family company that was started in 1936 by Harold Beck. The company has grown over the years, providing their American-made electric actuators for many different uses and industries. They have more recently expanded into the water and wastewater industry.

The tour continued into the manufacturing facility where the group observed how actuators are created. Starting where raw materials are received and processed, the group took a sinuous route through the plant following each progressive stage of part processing and assembly. Highlights included watching the automated mechanical arm process parts and seeing the final phase where each actuator is hand assembled. The tour was interesting and well presented. Finally, the group moved to the Green Parrot where they could continue to ask questions, but also socialize and enjoy the mild summer weather out on the patio.
