Spring 2019 Conference (Highlights)

What was it that drew a record crowd of 176 water professionals to our Spring Joint Conference in Exton, PA for the AWWA PA Section – SE District & Eastern Section – WWOAP? It may have been…

…the theme, “Water Quality: What’s New and Next?”, featuring Lenny Bilger and Phil Stack (Western Berks Water Authority) sharing their experience with a new Nitrification Control Plan.

…a close look at storage tanks by Christine Gunsaullus (Entech Engineering), that explained design and operational changes with tanks in the last 25 years, along with Frank Houston (DN Tanks) showing how to build three 32 million gallon reservoirs in the middle of Philadelphia.

…technical talks from Aqua America, with David Rustay sharing his experience with TOC, UVA and Enhanced Coagulation, and Chris Crockett giving us a common sense explanation of PFAS, along with an update on National and SE PA Developments.

…our Premier Sponsor, National Water Specialties Company (NAWSC), who offers cross-connection control (CCC) services.

…a timely talk on road salt’s effects on water treatment from John Jackson (Stroud Water Research Center).

…learning how Drexel University’s Student Chapter of Engineers Without Borders is helping communities in Philadelphia as well as abroad in El Salvador and Ecuador with water projects. We proudly presented the students with a $1,000 check, which will be put to immediate use on their upcoming trip to Ecuador.

…two new elected officials to lead our group: Chip Bilger as Chair, and Matt Walborn as Vice-Chair, both from Western Berks Water Authority, as well as the confirmation of Lijie Li (KCI Technologies) continuing as Secretary/Treasurer.

Or maybe it was simply the chance to learn, laugh, and spend the day with other professionals who share the same passion for clean drinking water.

Fall 2018 Conference (Highlights)

While the weather outside was dreary (again!), things were bright and cheery inside at the Pennsylvania Southeast AWWA / WWOAP Fall Conference. Our theme was “Keeping Up with Changing Water Regulations”, and speakers got us up to date on the regulation side as well as the technology and construction side.

We value input from the PA DEP at our conferences, and appreciated a regulatory update from Dawn Hissner. Then Justin Blashaw highlighted various tools on their website for distribution system optimization, plus free water quality assessment services that the DEP offers.

Aqua Pennsylvania not only took the lead as our Premier Sponsor again, but also shared their expertise on a variety of topics, including how Fred Gerloff and Kyle Roberts turned a 10 million gallon water tank into its own water treatment facility, Tom Hanna explained new inclined plate settlers at one of their plants, and Chuck Hertz delved into the mysteries of UCMR4.

Wally Bates from Tnemec described a new insulation coating technology and its potential use to prevent sweating inside pipe galleries, on tanks inside water treatment plants, and on the interior dry surfaces of elevated water tanks.

Numerous people at the conference commented on the high quality of the speakers, and noted how the conference gets better and better every year. That is thanks to the efforts of many volunteers, two of whom we honored. John Brady (Entech Engineering) received the Recognition Award for his services to our conference, including technical liaison between us and the PA AWWA. Dan Preston (North Penn Water Authority) was awarded the coveted “Herb Spencer Award” for his dedication to our section and the state. As Dan noted afterwards,

“It was such an honor and a shock to receive the Herb Spencer Award. Thanks to those who selected me. It is great to work with such class people over the years who refuse to settle for mediocre, but instead take pride in our regional District meeting making it the best out there, and always finding ways to make it better! I have watched the SE meeting evolve over time with an emphasis on continuous improvement year in and year out, and with an understanding of the needs of attendees. Ours has come a long way over the last 20 years.”

Finally, after hearing updates on the inspiring work of local water organizations, we continued to give back to the water industry by presenting the Philadelphia Chapter of Engineers Without Borders with a $750 check, as well as a $500 check to Tony Bellitto for Water For People.

Spring 2018 Conference (Highlights)

The room was filled a few weeks ago at the Spring Technical Conference for the AWWA PA Section – Southeast District / Eastern Section WWOAP. More than 150 water professionals filled the room, drawn in by topics on “Water Quality from Source to Tap”.

To keep attendees up to date with legislation affecting the water industry, Serena DiMagno (Spotts, Stevens and McCoy) kicked things off by sharing the latest developments with the crowd. Tom Caulfield (UGSI Solutions) spoke about disinfectant control in large standpipes, Madeleine Driscoll (KCI Technologies) explained how asset management can enhance water quality, and Christine Gunsaullus (Entech Engineering) explained how to best use the new AWWA M-68 Manual on Water Quality in Distribution Systems.

New officers elected to the AWWA PA Section – Southeast District were Kristen Bowman-Kavanagh, P.E. (Flow Science) as Chair, Chip Bilger (Western Berks Water Authority) as Chair-Elect, and Matt Boeh (UGSI Chemfeed) as District Trustee. Lijie Li, PhD, P.E. (KCI Technologies) will continue as Secretary/Treasurer.

We continued our tradition of supporting young water engineers by inviting students from the University of Pennsylvania Chapter of Engineers Without Borders to present on their ongoing water and wastewater work in Guatemala. They received a $750 donation which will help fund their next trip to help a community where Google Maps can’t help you get around.

Finally, our conference always draws a great mix of engineers and operators, so we continued our breakout afternoon session catering to our Operators, featuring Gary Burlingame of the Philadelphia Water Department explaining how to reduce risks from water contamination in distribution systems.

A big thank you to all of our sponsors, particularly our Premier Sponsor, Aqua Pennsylvania, Inc., who allow us to keep the cost of the conference down for attendees, and still share generously with the next generation of water engineers. See you in October!

Fall 2016 Conference (Highlights)

The Fall 2016 Joint Technical Conference for the SE District of the AWWA PA Section and the Eastern Section of WWOAP drew a crowd of approximately 120 people concerned about water supplies, source water protection, and tank mixing. The transition from presentation to presentation was very dynamic, with each speaker building on the stories and knowledge from the previous speakers. What was very evident was the passion and experience that so many presenters shared, from Chip Bilger and Matt Walborn (Western Berks Water Authority) explaining the challenges of adequately treating highly turbid source water during a spring thaw runoff event this past year, to Kristen Bowman-Kavanagh (Flow Science Inc.) presenting on the Limnology of Reservoirs. A panel discussion focused on the use of tank mixer users and included Tom Caulfield from Aqua PA, Doug Crawshaw from York Water, and Ralph Wawrzyniakowski from PA American who shared the good, the bad, and the ugly in regards to their real-world experiences installing and maintaining tank mixers, and Christine Gunsaullus (Entech Engineering) served as the panel’s moderator.

Betsy Ross made an early morning appearance and reminded the crowd of the exciting opportunity for everyone to attend ACE17, the national AWWA conference that is to be held at the Convention Center in Philadelphia from June 10 – 14 of next year. Registration is now open at www.ace17.org, and anyone interested in volunteering can contact Don Hershey at donhershey@paawwa.org to be added to the list.

The Conference also included awards for the hard-working volunteers in our section, with Service Awards presented to Steve Farney from the Chester Water Authority, and Russ Williams who is recently retired from the Chester Water Authority. The Herb Spencer III award went to a very surprised and grateful Tom Bradbury of the North Wales Water Authority.

Finally, our section continued to give generously to charities that serve the water industry throughout the world. Tony Bellitto of the North Penn Water Authority shared facts and figures about Water For People, and the enormous changes they have made for clean water and sanitation efforts in nine different countries. The Philadelphia Professionals Chapter of Engineers Without Borders (James Furman II, Adam Erispaha and Kat Smith) also shared stories about their projects to improve access to potable water in El Salvador and the Philippines. Both organizations were presented with a donation check to help them to continue their good works.
