Unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, age 74, of Squirrel Hill. Beloved husband of Kathleen J. States; father of Tom States (Meliheh), Mike States (Barbara), and Joe States (Rebecca); brother of Kathleen Goliat (Henry), Maureen States, and the late Eileen Robins; also survived by nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Stanley’s greatest joy was being the “Dziadziu” (grandfather) of Lena, Maggie, and Oliver.

Stanley was a first generation American whose father and grandparents emigrated from Poland in the early 1900s.

Stanley was a proud graduate of Central Catholic High School (class of 1966) and the University of Pittsburgh, where he received a BS, MS, and Ph.D. He was a band member for his alma maters Central Catholic and the University of Pittsburgh, playing the trumpet. He was also active in the Shriners band.

Stanley served over 25 years in the US Army Reserves, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He worked at the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority for 37 years as Director of Water Quality and Production and Director of Research. He was a full-time instructor with Texas A&M University’s Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) since 2001 where he taught emergency preparedness and security for water utilities under the sponsorship of the Department of Homeland Security. Stanley was the author of “Polish Pittsburgh” and “Security and Emergency Planning for Water and Wastewater Utilities.”

Friends received at McCABE BROS., INC. FUNERAL HOME, 6214 Walnut Street, Shadyside on Sunday and Monday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., where a service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Due to a recent COVID exposure in the family, masks will be required at the funeral home and cemetery.
