Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County (MAWC) Wins Back to Back People’s Choice Awards

MAWC Wins Back to Back People’s Choice Awards

Water from Indian Creek wins 2018 Awards, Beaver Run won in 2017

(May 9) NEW STANTONThe Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County bested water samples from across the state to win both the People’s Choice Award and Best of the Best Award for Best Tasting Water in Pennsylvania at the 70th annual American Water Works Association convention in Pocono Manor, PA.

This was the second straight year that the MAWC took home the People’s Choice Award, but this year, it was for water from the Indian Creek Water Treatment Plant along the Youghiogheny River, near South Connellsville.

The sample from Indian Creek also took the juried award for overall Best of the Best Award from a panel of four water experts. Last year, a water sample from the George Sweeney water treatment plant on the Beaver Run Reservoir won the people’s choice award.

Water from the Indian Creek plant serves MAWC customers in Fayette County, southern Westmoreland County, and Forward and North Versailles Townships in Allegheny County. The Sweeney plant serves the northern portion of Westmoreland County, along with communities in Armstrong and Indiana counties.

More than 45 water treatment operators, engineers, consultants and others voted in the 2018 event, with MAWC’s sample from Indian Creek taking home both People’s Choice and the Best of the Best prize.

“The water from the upper Youghiogheny River is very clean, giving us a great quality water to work with,” said Mark Stoner MAWC’s head of Water Quality.

Indian Creek Water Treatment Plant is permitted to withdraw 40 million gallons of water from the Yough River daily, and serves about 55 percent of the MAWC’s 120,000 drinking water customers.

The Indian Creek plant was built in 1970 on the site of a former electric generation plant.
