Water Distribution Operator Service Person

Job Description

Capital Region Water is looking for a driven, hardworking, and dedicated applicant for a Service Person at the Dr. R.E. Young Water Service Center located on Pine Drive in Harrisburg, PA.

This entry level position is responsible for semi-skilled work involving the operation, construction, and maintenance of the water distribution system.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Field Services Supervisor or other Division Management, as required. Work involves but is not limited to the following: excavates and completes restoration of streets and sidewalks as required. Operates jackhammer, earth tamper, power saws, pumps, generators, compressors, tapping machines, and pipe-locating and leak-detection equipment.

Performs laying, servicing, and repairing water mains and service lines, and the maintenance, repair, and installation of valves, fire hydrants, water meters, and
MXUs. Loads and unloads trucks with materials (weighing up to 200 lbs. with assistance if possible). Sets up and may use rescue retrieval system (weighing up to 200 lbs. with assistance from two (2) co-workers).

Performs customer service duties, such as opening and closing curb valves, setting and removing meters, special meter readings and leak inspection. Performs flow testing of fire hydrants. Remains alert and reacts appropriately to audio and/or visual alarms on vehicular equipment, gas detectors and rescue retrieval system.
Enters and exits ditches to perform service and repair work.

Qualified applicants will possess the following:

Knowledge of the current practices in distribution system construction, operation, maintenance, and repair.

Ability to understand and follow instructions verbally and in writing.
Ability to operate specialized industry equipment.

Ability to perform record keeping and prepare maintenance reports manually and with computer software such as Microsoft Access and Excel.

Ability to react quickly and appropriately to alarms and hazardous situations.
High school diploma or equivalent.

One year’s practical experience in installing, maintaining, and repairing water mains and appurtenances.

Experience in backhoe operation preferred.

Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License, Class C.

Or, any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability.

 

Entry Level Maintenance Assistant Laborer

Job Description

Capital Region Water is looking for a dedicated and driven individual to fill a Laborer position at the Dr. R.E. Young Water Service Center on Pine Drive in Harrisburg. This is an entry level position responsible for performing routine manual work usually of a repetitive nature in various areas of the water distribution system.

Work involves but is not limited to the following: cleans, sweeps, dusts, mops, washes windows, polishes furniture. Cleans gutters, culverts, sewers, and other drainage structures. Cuts grass, maintains flower beds, rakes leaves, shovels snow, and picks up litter. Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, pipe, timber, blocks and bricks (weighing up to 35 lbs.) and other objects (weighing up to 100 lbs with mechanical
assistance). Sets up and may use rescue retrieval system (weighing up to 200 lbs. with assistance from two (2) additional workers). Mixes concrete, digs and backfills trenches, unfinished laying of block or brick, and performs general maintenance or construction duties, opens manholes and valve covers (weighing up to 200 pounds with manhole hook or co-worker assistance when possible). Remains alert and reacts appropriately to
audio and/or visual alarms on vehicular equipment and rescue retrieval system. Assists the meter reader from time to time which may require working in confined spaces.

Qualified applicants will possess the following:

Good knowledge of and ability to operate hand and small power tools.

Ability to operate small motor vehicle equipment.

Ability to understand and follow instructions.

Ability to perform work requiring dexterity, often under adverse weather and working conditions.

Ability to adapt to situations involving repetitive duties and alert with respect to dangers involved with hazardous gases, etc.

Ability to react quickly and appropriately to alarms and hazardous situations
High School diploma or equivalent.

One year maintenance, construction or related work experience preferred.

A valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License, Class C.
