On World Water Day, the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs Reminds Pennsylvanians How to Properly Dispose of Medication

Harrisburg, PA – Today is World Water Day, and the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) is using this day to remind Pennsylvanians how to properly dispose of expired or unwanted medication.

“Do not flush them down the toilet, where they could also make their way into and pollute the water supply,” said Acting DDAP Secretary Jennifer Smith.

“World Water Day is a time to remember that water touches us all and it’s our responsibility to ensure it is clean now and for future generations,” Smith said.

Pennsylvania has a system in place for people to easily dispose of medication that is expired or no longer needed.

“The goal is to take your unwanted meds to one of more than 500 drug take-back locations in the state,” Smith said.

The drug take-back program is offered in collaboration with local law enforcement, the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association, the state Attorney General’s Bureau of Narcotics Investigation (BNI), the Pennsylvania National Guard, and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

“Prescription drugs cannot be thrown out in the trash because they could be found by others and used or abused, neither of which is safe,” said Smith.

By disposing of your unwanted and expired medications responsibly, you also are doing your part to help curb the opioid epidemic that claims the lives of ten people a day in the commonwealth.

If you or someone you know is suffering from substance use disorder, help is available. Please call 1-800-662-HELP or visit pa.gov/opioids to find treatment options.
